Everyday life in the Rheinwald 80 years ago
Washing clothes, picking dock, making hay
Women doing their washing in the village square, getting pig feed before there were silos, dangerous haymaking on steep slopes and bringing home the hay in winter – fortunately the Basel society for popular traditions made several films in the 1940s documenting everyday rural life in the Rheinwald. The silent, black-and-white films bear witness to the arduous work that could only be done as a community – and also show the beauty of the valley.
Reto Attenhofer shows excerpts from various films and explains the background of these every-day tasks that seem so far from what we know today.
